Gomoku: Five Stones in a Row is a board strategy game for a pair of participants. On a square board that measures 19×19 (in the classic edition) or 15×15 (in the contemporary sports version) points, players take turns positioning stones of two different hues. The victor is the one who first forms an unbroken line of five stones of their hue vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. There are numerous variations, each differing in specific aspects of the rules. The game is thought to have been created in China over two millennia ago. Presently, the game enjoys global recognition; competitive events are organized based on it.
